Disappointing Products

Is it weird that these are one of my favorite types of posts to read? I think it’s great hearing about products that are amazing, but I also like to know which ones aren’t so great. I put together a list of a few products that disappointed me, this doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re awful, but they might not live up to the hype or I don’t think they are worth the money. Some of the products shown below are actually pretty decent, but they’re price or the hype they have is just too much for how they actually perform. This is just my opinion, so if I mentioned something below that you love, let me know in the comments, because maybe I’m just using it wrong or there’s a better way to use it.

Stila Huge Extreme Mascara
I got this as a sample from Sephora awhile back, which is why mine is so tiny. The wand of this mascara is really similar to the Too Faced Better Than Sex, which is one I love, but the formulas are totally different. For some reason, this stuff smudges everywhere. No matter what I do this ends up all over my lower lid. It’s happened on multiple occasions and I just can’t figure out why, but for $23 it should stay on the lashes and not go everywhere else. This one is definitely not worth the price, especially since there are drugstore mascaras that are so much better.

NYX High Voltage Lipstick in Mirage
The actual formula of this lipstick is pretty nice, it’s really creamy and goes on smooth. I don’t know if it’s just the color of this or what, but this stuff just looks awkward on me. It’s a really pretty nude pink, but the color settles into all the lines on my lips, making them look cracked and chapped, even when they aren’t. I haven’t tried other colors from this line, so I don’t know if it’s just this one that’s a flop or if they all are. These are pretty reasonably priced, so I won’t write off the whole line just yet, but for me this color is a dud.

NYX Lip Lingerie
This one kills me to say, because everyone loves these. But I’m not crazy about them at all. All the colors in the range look almost identical, with the exception of like two. I bought two at Ulta last week, one that looked pink and another that looked more tan, but when I got home I couldn’t tell them apart. Immediately after application, these feel really sticky, just like a gloss does. The formula is so drying, and settles into all the lines on my lips, even when I have a liner on and moisturized not long before. The lipstick itself also does that thing on me where it separates into little balls around the corners of my mouth and in random other places. It’s not a cute look. I’m not going to give up on these just yet, but I definitely won’t be purchasing anymore.

Laura Mercier Eye Basics Primer in Wheat
I did a full review on this product way back on my blog, I think it was my second post ever. But this is another product that I hear so much love for, but it’s just not good. Whenever I wear this, all my shadow comes off, like I can’t even see traces of my shadow a few hours later. With all the other amazing shadow primers out there, this one is not worth the $27 price tag.

Real Techniques Bold Metals
Okay, so this is a product that I actually like. But, I don’t think they’re worth the price.  Real Technique brushes are amazing, so when I saw that Ulta was running a buy one get one free on the bold metals collection awhile back, I had to get my hands on two. They’re so soft and gorgeous (who doesn’t love rose gold?!) but in my opinion they aren’t much better than the regular collection. Save your money and get the normal collection, or if you get these, wait till they’re on sale.

  1. I agree with the NYX lipsticks…the nude colors just don’t wear well. I am not sure how much you’re willing to spend on an eye primer but macs paint pod in Ocre is awesome!

      1. I have been using it for a while and I love it. Plus there is so much product, so it will last you forever! And correction, its Soft Ocre. 😀

  2. Ah I’m so glad to find someone who hates the nyx lingerie as much as me! I found them this morning on someone’s blog and went to buy it BUT when I went to buy some for myself the color selection was awful! Nudes look awful on me!

    1. Aside from a red and a true pink, they all look like the exact same color. Definitely not worth all the hype they’re getting! The revlon liquid lips are soooo much better and the color selection is actually good

  3. Love this post! Especially the nyx lip lingerie review. So many people raving like you say but I agree that a lot of the colours look very similar to one another which is what puts me off buying into the range X

  4. Hey, I am new to the blogging world and was wondering if you could take a look at my blog and possibly give me some advice, I would really appreciate the help.
    Thanks Hope xx

  5. I love reading disappointing product posts too! I just recently bought the Nyx lip lingerie and did not like. I already have somewhat dry lips and prefer a more satin finish but this was so sticky and drying that I had to take it off.

  6. Thank you so much for this post! Was actually considering the nyx lip lingerie but not sure I want to waste my money on that now xx And you’re right, these posts are SO hopeful because they just save you from so much potential disappointment!

  7. Totally agree with the Bold Metals. I adore them and was very lucky that I got bought 2 for my birthday (as you said rose gold aye?). They seem a bit overpriced as they are the same quality as the standard ones. I do love the shiny standard ones and have added several to my collection. Have you tried the 200 Oval Shadow brush? I adore that for blending, one i’m happy that I paid a little more for. 🙂 x

  8. I’m late to this discussion but the NYX Matte Lip Cremes sound a lot like their Lip Lingerie. I had to return the two I bought because they made my lips look super dry and wrinkly and did not wear long. ☹️😂
